Lesson 6: Computers at Work
INput----Processing----OUTput

How Computers Works

A Computer
     Inputs Information......
            Processes Information.....

Stores Information.......
                         Outputs Information.....

HOW?

Data is input into a computer,
the computer
processes the data in the
Central Processing Unit
(CPU).
It is in the CPU where the data is
stored
and processed into meaningful information.
This information is then
output
onto the monitor's screen so we can see it.

Input is a computer term used to describe the data that is entered into a computer.
An Input Device is a type of peripheral device that can use to input data into your computer. The following are all input devices.
Keyboard
Mouse

Processing is the computer manipulation of data so that it can be transformed into meaningful information.
The central processing unit (CPU) is the part of the computer which processes data.

The CPU is made up of three parts:

1. Control Unit which interprets data and programs instructions. It directs the step-by-step operation of your computer system.

2. Arithmetic Logic Unit is the where the mathematical
and logical ( yes or no) operations are performed.

3. Memory Unit is where the data and information are stored.
RAM and ROM are the memory units in your computer.

When you make an ice cream shake, your blender is simulating a computer's processing unit.

Assignment:

Technology Lab: A washing machine is a processing unit. Can you think of any others?
Using Appleworks 6 Word Processor make a list, discuss why you think it is a processing unit and how it works.
Save your work in your student work folder. Title your work: YourLastName_answers_processor

Data is stored in the CPU Memory Unit  until it is processed into  meaningful information.

Output is information the computer gives back to us, it is the result of the processing of input.
An output device is a type of peripheral or piece of computer hardware that displays output to you.
Monitor
Printer

Assignment:

Technology Lab: Add input and output devices to the chart you created in Chapter 3: Lesson 5. Write the name of the device and what type to device it is. Input or Output?
Save your work in your student work folder.
Title your work: YourLastName_answers_in_out
