Lesson 1: What is a Computer?

A Computer is a Machine. 

A computer is an electronic machine.

A computer is a programmable machine and the two principal characteristics of a computer are:
  1. It responds to a specific set of instructions. 
  2. It can execute a prerecorded list of instructions (a program). 

 

Modern computers are electronic and digital.

Homework: Look in magazines to find different types of machines. Cut them out and make a collage of them. 


 

 


A Computer is a tool.

A tool is anything used by the hands to help complete a job.

 

A computer is a tool that we use to help us do our work.

 




If you were asked to create a map of the World. 
What tools might you use to complete the job? 

You probably would need pen or pencil and a ruler.
You might need colored markers, crayons or even paints to color you map. You might even use scissors,
glue, and construction paper. All of the underline words are tools. They help you complete the job.





Assignment:


2:Technology Lab
: Using AppleWorks 6: Word Processing
make a list of all the tools you use through out the day. Next to each tool write how it helps you to do your work.
Save your work in your student work folder.
Title your work: YourLastName_answers_tools


A computer is also a tool we can use to help us complete tasks. Computers can help you write reports for school or letters to your friends. They can add numbers and help you learn math. They can even create music and art. Computers can help you learn about anything you want.
